Cognitive scientists have documented a well-established pattern in skilled practitioners across many fields: early success tends to compress the feedback loop between effort and outcome. When researchers experience this compression, they begin to attribute results to their instincts rather than to their processes. The validation steps that once felt essential begin to feel redundant. Research centers and universities that build methodological review into their internal grant processes, that create formal checkpoints at project milestones, and that recognize methodological rigor as a legitimate contribution in promotion and tenure decisions are creating environments where sustained discipline is structurally supported rather than left entirely to individual will.
